You Are Who You Are By Oliver Scheier Age 9

Oliver S 3My name is Oliver Scheier, and I am 9 years old.  I was born with a very rare form of Muscular Dystrophy called Rigid Spine. I am one of only 70 cases in the world and that makes me feel really special.  My muscles and spine are not as strong as other kids and I can’t run as fast as other kids. At night, I have to give myself a shot and wear a breathing mask that gives me energy during the day.

Sometimes people say to me “why do you run so slow” and that makes me feel sad, but I know that I run as fast as my body can run. And sometimes in gym, my friends run at my speed, which makes me really lucky to have friends like that. I even have had “breakdowns” where I say “why am I not normal” but as I have gotten older, I except who I am and am proud of it.

I love to play tennis, soccer, football, swim and even DANCE. I always do the best that I can do. I even love learning about historic people like Abraham Lincoln and have watched Titanic over 100 times! My favorite thing in the world to play is Minecraft because it doesn’t matter if you are strong or not to play! I feel as normal as all of the other kids.

I’d like to give to a “shout out” to other kids with physical differences or disabilities…

YOU ARE WHO YOU ARE, AND NOTHING CAN STOP YOU FROM BEING THE BEST YOU CAN BE!!!!!!!!!!Oliver Scheier

I have never met Oliver but know his mom’s parents and brothers. What a tribute to a family of strength and resilience. I know, besides making his parents, grandparents, and uncles proud, he is blessed by being surrounded by love and support as he shares his amazing journey.
