This Little Light of Mine, I’m Gonna Let It Shine By Ellis Sorensen Age 10

Ellis SorensonI look different than most kids at my school. The color of my skin and the texture of my hair are different, and this makes me stand out.  Many kids are curious about my hair and how it feels and some kids like to touch it – A LOT.  Some touch it without asking and some ask to touch it and I let them because I don’t mind.  Most kids think my hair is cool. They say it’s soft.  But sometimes kids are unkind, like the time a kid said to me that I probably wish I was not born a black person.

This hurt my feelings because I could not understand why someone would say that. You see, I am very proud of my skin color, I am very proud of who I am and from where I come.

Because of what has happened to me at school, I learned that sometimes kids can be harsh because they are curious about things they don’t really understand.  I wish that all kids could learn what I’ve been taught about my history and my ancestors. My mom and dad teach me things at home and tell me stories that you cannot find in schoolbooks or see in the movies.   Black Americans have made history, inventions and discoveries in the arts, business, education, the military, medicine and science, and sports. If other kids knew what I know, they would understand why I am so proud to be African-American.

Sure, my ancestors were enslaved and treated badly in history, but they overcame those terrible times. They fought hard and because of them I have lots of amazing stories to tell, a strong family, COOL HAIR and I am super proud.

My mom tells me, “In the dark we are all the same.”  Ellis 2

And I say,

“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.”
