“Spunk” By Sarah McIntyre (Age 17)

This piece represents the hardships that I have endured in my life. The textures, found objects, spray paint and even the glitter offer a glimpse into who I am as a girl becoming a woman. The world has shown me pain and neglect from my alcoholic mother, which is represented by the nails as I have had to grow tough. There is a star to represent my drive for success and self-sufficiency. There is a rock that reminds me to stay grounded as I attempt to be the first in my family to attend college. The sequins show that part of me just wants to be a girl. A key reminds me that I hold the key to a better life, and that I am in control. Then there is a leaf, reminding me to keep it light, despite the things that life throws my way. I have decorated the boot with these objects as they all represent aspects of who I am, who I have been, and who I am becoming.”  –Sarah McIntyre. RBC Flaunt It Award (Art Finalist)
