My Glasses Helped Me See What Really Matters By Merav Shapiro

Merav ShapiroSome people have glasses and some people don’t.

My name is Merav.  I’m nine.  Almost a year ago, I realized that I needed glasses.  I thought that a lot of people would laugh at me because I am the only girl with glasses in my whole grade of over 70 kids.

When I heard that I needed glasses, I started crying in the doctor’s office. I started to say that I didn’t want glasses.  I thought I wouldn’t be like anyone else.  I wasn’t like any girl in my class.  I realized that even though the glasses can make me look different sometimes, at least they can help me see.

I was really nervous going to school for the first time with my new glasses.  I thought people would call me names and start laughing at me.  In my heart I had a little crack because I felt like I looked silly and I wouldn’t fit in anymore.

Well, it turns out that when I went to school most people were actually comforting me and telling me that I looked wonderful.  I felt like the crack in my heart filled in with love. There was one boy in my class who called me “four eyes.”  I told my sister and her friend what had happened.  They tried to cheer me up with some funny advice.  But now I don’t care what people say or think about me because I know in my heart that my friends will always be by my side.

By the way, I went to the store and I picked out red glasses with stripes on the edge for special occasions. (My mom picked out black and white ones for other days).  Now people notice me and my colorful glasses and I feel proud.

My advice.
I am telling you that you don’t need to be ashamed of what is different. It’s good to show it.  Your different stuff can be really useful.  Unfortunately it can be a pain in the tush sometimes.  But we are all different and there is nothing to be sad about.  Some people have glasses and some people don’t, but those other kids might have a different challenge.  When you have a challenge, remember  NEVER EVER EVER EVER BE ASHAMED OF WHO YOU ARE .

Hi Merav! Not only did I like it, I absolutely loved it! I think if you want it you definitely could have a career in writing when you grow up or even sooner! You are clearly beautiful, inside and out. Please send my love and thank to your parents. xoxo
