I Love My Life By Julia Smarto Age 19

Julia Smarto photoI have many things to be thankful for.  For one, my family and friends.

I live with my mom and dad and two sisters.  I am the oldest and 19 years old, my sister Krista is 16 and my youngest sister Amelia is 12.  I also can’t forget our little dog Tia who is 6.

I graduated last May from high school and proud to say that I was on the honor roll all 4 years.  I have been in inclusion since pre-school.

Some things that I enjoy are listening to music, play on my ipad , text on my iphone, go to the movies and hang out with my family and friends.  Throughout my years, I have been involved in so many activities such as:  dance, soccer, swim, karate, choir, girl scouts, basketball, etc.

My favorite activity has to be dance.  I began with a ballet class at the age of 5 and never stopped dancing.  I loved it so much, that my mom and I got a group together and formed a “Special Needs” Dance troupe.   We are a Performing Troupe that dances weekly together and perform monthly to various places in our area.  Last year our group was 1 of the 9 groups who were chosen from the entire Midwest to compete on America’s Got Special Talent.  There were celebrity judges and we even got to sign some autographs.  This past November, our same group was written up in the Chicago Tribune.  I also assistant teach to a class of 3 and 4 year old little dance diva’s. They are all so cute.

I enjoy little kids and have taken many courses over the years in Child Education.  I have volunteered for over 3 years at pre-schools and day care centers and have also assistant taught religious education to kindergartners and first graders.  I also received the “Youth Servant Leadership” award for doing this.

I have been certified in CPR, First Aide and AED.  With this, I recently accepted a job as an assistant teacher 4 days a week at the pre-school I had been interning at and now I am earning a paycheck.  I am so happy, because I love the kids and they love me!

I am in a transition program through our school district.  It is a day program that I attend Monday through Friday after working my job at the pre-school.  This will help me to learn life skills such as cooking, cleaning, banking, transportation and so many other great things that will promote independence.

I like vacationing and some of my greatest adventures were para sailing, zip lining tubing, jet skiing and even sliding down a tube in a tank full of sharks.  Although, the best one yet, was my last vacation in Mexico when we swam with the dolphins.  It was amazing!!!

I also have had a boyfriend for 4 years and we went to every Homecoming and Prom together.  Senior Prom was the best time of our lives.  I’ll never forget how much fun our group had in the limo and at the “after party”.

I have my drivers permit and continue practice driving on the roads.  My sister and I are doing this together and now it really makes my mom and dad nervous!

I FEEL VERY LUCKY BECAUSE I AM JULIA, I AM ME AND I LOVE MY LIFE!!!
