All I Can Be is Just Me, Alexis Kelley, Age 14

Alexis Kelley photoHi!  My name is Alexis Kelley and I am 14 years old. I was born at 24 weeks and I weighed 1 pound 6 ounces. I have Cerebral Palsy on my left side. What in the world it that you say? It is the way God made me.

My arm and leg on my left side are very tight and tense. This is a side effect from being born early. It affects me in many ways. Sometimes I am off balance or just sore from working all those tight muscles. Kids at school ask a lot of questions. Like does it hurt? Sometimes it does when I do activities that stretch my muscles. Most people think that I could never Surf or even dance. My Dad helps me with surfing and I have even gotten pretty good. I love to Dance and even though I do it my way practice helps me to get better. I love to Sing and Act too!  Sometimes kids aren’t very nice and it hurts my feelings but my Mom always says all you can do is, “Throw it out there and let it go.” That has become my motto.

What I really want everyone to know is that even though I have differences on the outside my heart is the same as everyone else’s. I just want people to get to know me. I want to have good friends too. I have a family that is always there for me and that helps.
